What is peace?

We live in a fast paced world that seems to demand we move faster each day.

Technology can be friend or foe. Friend, when we are using it to work more efficiently. Foe, when we suddenly find ourselves overloaded and unable to unplug. With less opportunity for down time, finding peace in our daily lives is becoming a rare thing in our hectic lives. Where are those peaceful breaks when we need them most? Creating peaceful moments can have a profound positive effect on our personal wellbeing and its benefits are greatly amplified when we come together in community.

What is peace? How can we create peace in our lives? Let’s start with how dictionary defines it.

Peace is:

•    The absence of mental stress or anxiety.

•    Harmonious patience for the states prevailing during the absence of war

•    A treaty to cease hostilities

Sounds pretty abstract and removed from regular life. Right?

How can we create peace? I asked a few of my friends and here’s what they had to say:

“I find peace in the sky, the ocean, in brand new snow, in trees, birds in flight and in my soul...sometimes!” - Juanin

“Peace is the quiet space inside me where everything stands still. Beautiful things, particularly Nature, take me there. Since it is inside me I can go whenever I need, even in the middle of traffic.” – Teresa

“Peace is lifting my hands in praise to the Lord on high and casting my burdens upon Him.” – Letty

“Peace is to live and let live. I find it when I show respect for others and others respect my point of view.” - Andres

“Me sitting next to a window sipping tea while pores rain outside. Whenever I look at rain, I feel peace with where I am at in life. I also think at least I’m not outside in the pouring rain! Ha ha. When it rains I’m grateful about life and where I am at literally or metaphorically. Rain is a peacemaker for me.” – Jessy

While the dictionary tells us peace is the absence of stress, violence or hostility, its broad meaning leaves it up to each one of us to define what peace is for ourselves. I like to think peace is something that lives inside of each one of us, that we can access it anywhere, at anytime. We can share a peaceful moment with loved ones, friends and family, our neighbors, our community and with the world.

For me peace is when I can find stillness in myself regardless of what is going on around me. It is when I can stand grounded and connected to myself no matter how hard the wind is blowing or which direction it is coming from. For me peace is an internal state of being, connecting with nature, a deep appreciation of life or any activity that makes me feel alive!

Look to create more peaceful moments not just for yourself, but to share with others. The more peace you can create the better it will be for our communities, the world and all of humanity.

May peace be with you!
